Plan Ahead

Define your objective. What do you want to say to people?  Who is your target audience (Who are you talking to?).

Use a site chart. Web storyboarding is a planning technique you can use to map out your website.  After gathering content for your website you can use a storyboard to define your links and to categorize your site content into sections.

Think style. Now comes the fun part!  Once you know what you want to say and who to say it to, the next step will be determining the mood of your site. Should the ambient be informal, high tech or professional?  GetMyWebSite has hundreds of templates for you to choose from. The template style should reflect your personal/professional identity. Whatever you decide, maintain the same theme and conventions throughout your site. Our template manager will also allow you to customize any of your existing designs.

Designing Within a Text Page - Tables

Tables. A good site design needs balance, contrast, and white space. Using tables will accomplish good balance and alignment. Imagine trying to find your car in a crowded parking lot if everyone ignored the orange stripes and parked in every direction and angle.

If you simply place a chunk of text on a Web page, the dimensions of the viewer’s browser will determine the line length. When the user resizes his or her window, the text re-flows to fill the new space. Tables will allow you to position type and graphics on the “page” with some precision.

The Table Wizard highlighted in this screen shot will assist you in creating a table. Simply select the number of cells appropriate to your layout.

Double click on your table to view Table properties (below) within this properties box There are pre-developed table layouts. Simply place your text and graphics within the table for a professional looking page layout. Or design your own with the table designer.

Select the table tab. Inside this properties box you have the ability to control your table alignment, cell padding, cell spacing, borders, table colors and much more. Your table border will automatically become invisible unless specified otherwise. Also in this area you have the option of sizing your table by typing in the pixel amount.  Align your text and graphics and insert captions and titles.

Designing Within a Text Page -  Type

Type. When designing your web page, you will most certainly use fonts.  You need to understand how fonts affect both the design and the reader.

Changing the font family to your favorite font will make your site look good, in your browser, but if your readers do not have that font, it is most likely going to look very ugly. But don’t worry you have options...

Option one. Design with the standard fonts available on Windows and Macintosh computers. These fonts are available to select in your editor. They are as follows... Arial, Veranda, Courier, Georgia, Impact and Times New Roman.

Option two. If you absolutely have to have a specific font, such as for a logo or any other branding element then you should use an image. But remember using too many images will make your website slower and the text harder to read. Your viewer will not have the ability to resize the text by adjusting screen resolution; anyone who needs to make the font larger to read will not be able too.
Designing Within a Text Page -   Formatting Type

Using the text formatting tools available in the editor (above). You can change fonts, colors and sizesBold, italic and underline.

Use horizontal rules to separate paragraphs, or graphics if you want. As with everything else double click on the rule to get a properties box, where you control size, color and positioning.

Designing Within a Text Page - File Size! Sizing your Graphics

File size.  It’s a fact that graphics make a website look more attractive.  But, there are still many internet users on dial up, so reduce your file size!  Large images will make your site load very slowly.

Optimize your graphics.  Use an image editing program. If you do not have such a program don't worry.  There is FREE software out there you can download such as irfanview.

IrfanView is a simple-to-use, fast and compact graphic viewer and image editing program.  With IrfanView you can edit your image files to create effective and properly-sized graphics for Web pages.

When working with images for Web, there are two basic formats to use: GIF and JPEG (or JPG).

Resizing an image in irfanview.  When working with digital images, or graphics you should resize the image based on the pixel dimensions needed (do not "stretch" or "shrink" the image).

• Select File > Open.

Next select Image >
  Resize / Re-sample.

At the top left of the Resize / Re-sample Image dialog box you will see the Current size of your image in pixels.

Under the "Set new size" option, type in the number of pixels for either the width or height of your image. With the "Preserve aspect ratio" option active (check marked) you only need to type in one dimension as the other will automatically change.

Click the OK button.

Select File > Save As.

Rename your file and save it. If you rename the file your original will not be changed.

If you would like a tutorial on other features of IrfanView please see Instructional Endeavor’s tutorials on IrfanView.

There are also free online services that will optimize graphics for you. Here’s one: http://www.tools.dynamic drive.com/image optimizer

After you optimize your graphics you can resize within the editor. Please be advised that adjusting the width and height attributes in the editor does not makes the file size smaller - it just makes the visible representation smaller, the image still takes up the same file size, and bandwidth.  So make sure your graphic has been optimized prior to this next step.

After uploading your image you can double click on it to view a properties box (below). Within this properties box you can adjust the width and height in pixels. Make sure constrain proportions is checked.  Un-checking this box will result in a skewed image.
